That old sofa has to go. Maybe you bought a new one, maybe you’re moving, maybe it’s just finally time. Whatever the reason, getting rid of a sofa in New York City is a task that requires a bit of planning β especially if you’re in a walkup apartment or a building with a strict super.
Option 1: DSNY Bulk Item Pickup (Free)
New York City’s Department of Sanitation offers free bulk item pickup for oversized items including sofas. The catch: you need to schedule it in advance at nyc.gov/dsny, and pickup days can be several weeks out. You’ll need to place the item on the curb the night before your scheduled pickup β which means navigating your building’s rules about leaving items in the hallway or lobby overnight.
Option 2: Donate It
If your sofa is in decent condition β no major stains, tears, or structural damage β you may be able to donate it. Organizations that accept sofa donations in NYC include Housing Works, Salvation Army, and Goodwill. Many offer pickup, but scheduling can take 2-4 weeks and they may decline items that don’t meet their condition standards.
Option 3: Sell It or Give It Away
Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and Nextdoor are all viable options for a sofa in good condition. The challenge in NYC is coordinating pickup β the buyer needs to be able to get it out of your apartment and down to the street, which requires either their own help or a willingness to figure it out. Many listings sit for weeks before finding a taker.
Option 4: Professional Sofa Removal (Fastest)
The quickest and most hassle-free option is hiring a professional furniture removal company. A crew shows up at your scheduled time, carries the sofa out β disassembling it if needed β loads it into their truck, and you’re done. Same-day service is often available.
At NYC Furniture Removal, sofa and couch removal is one of our most common jobs. We’ve carried sofas down six-floor walkups, through 28-inch doorways, and around staircases that seem physically impossible to navigate. We do it every day. Call (646) 600-5126 for a free same-day quote.
What About Sectional Sofas?
Sectionals are a special challenge because of their size. The good news is that most sectionals can be disassembled β and our crews always check first. If it comes apart, we take it apart. If it doesn’t, we find another way. We’ve yet to meet a sofa we couldn’t remove.
